Tommaso Briganti
He was born in Gallipoli on 21 April, 1691 and he graduated in law in Rome in 1717, dedicating his life to legal studies in Gallipoli which was widely open to European cultural stimuli. He followed the reforms introduced by Tanucci in the Kingdom, arguing against pratical people and pettifoggers. He carefully analysed the origins and development of feudal law. He was against the “barbaric wickedness” of torture and against all forms of cruelty. Reflections and acute legal critique can be found in “Pratica criminale delle corti regie e baronali del Regno di Napoli“, published in Naples in 1755. Amongst his manuscripts are, a “Pratica civile del foro provinciale” (1746), “Discorsi istorici-giuridici sugli acquisti illeciti de’ religiosi e sugli impieghi di loro ricchezze in usi totalmente profani” and a booklet of Latin poems. He died in Gallipoli on 28 December 1762.
