The Pupi
In Gallipoli, on New Year’s Eve, at the stroke of midnight while everyone celebrates the arrival of the New Year with fireworks, bursting of firecrackers and various firecrackers, there is the custom of killing the old year with the lighting of the “pupo“, a papier-mâché puppet that is stuffed with firecrackers and blown up with a series of bursting batteries.
The pupi are often true works of art and are made in every neighborhood of the city.
